Here are some ideas to stay socially engaged and give back during these unprecedented times.

Flexibility: High

Social Engagement: High

What’s What:  If you want to discover what you’re capable of, consider hitting the road and volunteering impactfully with Projects Abroad.

Amava Take: Projects Abroad is the world’s largest provider of international volunteering and meaningful travel experiences. They’ve been around for over 25 years and over 120,000 participants have joined their award-winning trips. Projects Abroad takes responsible travel seriously. All of their volunteer projects work towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which means whichever Projects Abroad experience you choose, you’ll be helping to work towards a better and more sustainable future for all. From Africa to Asia to South America, Projects Abroad programs take place in breathtaking destinations that will enrich your sense of adventure along with your sense of purpose.

From the Front Lines:

What types of projects is Projects Abroad working on?

Supporting children’s education, protecting endangered wildlife and ecosystems, ethical consumerism, women’s empowerment, providing medical services to communities without access to healthcare, advocating for human rights and facilitating equal opportunity for all people. And more.

What types of people volunteer with Projects Abroad?

All types! People on Gap Years, students, families, groups, retirees and more. Projects Abroad has a group of trips designed specifically for volunteers aged 50 and over who want a career break or a meaningful way to spend retirement, but anyone is welcome on any Projects Abroad trip.

What distinguishes Projects Abroad from other organizations?

Safety is paramount. The welfare of volunteers is never outsourced. When you book with Projects Abroad, you’re with Projects Abroad from start to finish.

Where is Projects Abroad currently active?

AFRICA: Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania

ASIA: Cambodia, China, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam

EUROPE: Romania

LATIN AMERICA & THE CARIBBEAN: Argentina, Belize, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico and Peru

SOUTH PACIFIC: Fiji and Samoa

From the Trenches:

How can you make a difference in a short time?

Projects Abroad has considered this carefully. It might be hard to measure the difference one volunteer can make in a few weeks. But when thousands of people donate a short amount of time to the same long-term goals, massive progress happens. Every Projects Abroad program is carefully planned and monitored.

Any ways to save some money?

Yes! Amava Members can save $250 when they sign up for a Projects Abroad program (this can’t be used in combination with other promotions).

Does Projects Abroad take care of the details?

Yes, and it’s hassle-free. From airport transfer to lodging and meals, they’ve got safety, security and volunteer needs covered.

Special Requirements: For most Projects Abroad projects, no qualifications are necessary. You only need reasonable spoken English. No TEFL or teaching qualifications are necessary for teaching projects (although you are very welcome if you do happen to have them). When you apply, Projects Abroad will ask for a reference to assure that you are suitable for a project. All volunteers aged 21 and over who are participating in a project that involves working with children are required to provide a criminal record check as part of the application process.
