Flexibility: High

Social Engagement: High

What’s What: If you want to get into the groove without dipping into your bank account, most music festivals are in need of volunteers. Volunteering at a music festival can mean free tickets, discounts and perks, as well as gaining an insight into how major events are put together. You’ll also meet some cool, like-minded fans and maybe even catch an up-close look at your favorite drummer.

Amava Take: It takes hard work and meticulous planning to pull off a music festival and the profit margin can be slim. To help ensure profits and prevent loss, most festivals have a robust volunteer staff. It’s a great way to plan out a summer of volunteer fun and travel and get into pricey events on the cheap.

Fans who are happy to be there but also recognize that they’re there to work.

Any tips for first-timers to make it a productive and fulfilling experience?

Make sure you’re able to commit yourself 100%, and that you’ll show up to work without problem. Some festivals require a deposit to ensure that you’ll work and not disappear into the crowd.

What’s a typical daily schedule like?

Depending on the role you take on you will be expected to work a series of shifts over the course of the festival.

From the Trenches:

Meeting so many other fans and being part of the festival crew was very cool.

How would you describe the hard parts?

A lot of sweat and sleep deprivation—but totally worth it.

What surprised you the most about the experience?

I made good friends that I’m still in touch with today.

Special Requirements: In most cases no experience is necessary. Training is sometimes provided.
