What’s What: If you love seeing live music and think the best getaway is on a cruise ship, here’s a way to get a two-fer. There are dozens of music cruises year-round connecting bands with their fans. All genres of bands participate, from classic rock and heavy metal to country, Jazz and doo-wop. Even modern genres like electronic dance music are jumping on cruise lines.

Amava Take: It doesn’t get much better than hanging with the band on vacation. Imagine a concert-filled, sun-splashed cruise with the added allure of rubbing shoulders with your music idols at the buffet. It’s almost too cool to be true. Now you can get your music fix up close and personal while mingling with like-minded folks, relaxing in the sun and having a full cruise experience.

From the Front Lines:

What kinds of people enjoy these experiences?

Live music fans who want an immersive band experience on a cruise ship.

Any tips for first-timers to make it a productive and fulfilling experience?

It’s a floating music festival that goes on for hours and days so pace yourself, reapply your sunscreen often and drink lots of water.

What’s a typical daily schedule like?

It’s entirely up to you. Typically the mornings are slower paced with yoga, swimming and sunning. Music kicks off around 1 p.m. with two to three bands playing at most times. Activities continue after midnight with movies and games.

From the Trenches:

What’s the most satisfying part of the experience?

Being close to my favorite band while also being a few feet from food and steps away from my own bathroom and bed.

How would you describe the hard parts?

It’s hard to party like a rock star when you’re not, and sailing on the ocean is no time to try.

Which band do you most want to cruise with?

The Rolling Stones. I’d love to meet Mick Jagger or at least see him up close.

Special Requirements: None

Finding a Position: Band cruises are riding a wave of popularity and more musicians come on board all the time. If you have a favorite band, start with their website and get on their mailing list because most only do this once a year and it will likely sell out fast. Star Vista Live produces about a dozen band cruises featuring music genres like southern rock, disco, country and the 70s. Bands include Lynyrd Skynyrd, Air Supply, Three Dog Night, Blood Sweat & Tears, and more. Sixthman is another producer with a lot of big names. Check out KISS in November. Tickets are already on sale for the March 2020 ‘80s cruise featuring the B-52s, Patty Smyth, Jessie’s Girl and more.
