Getting to Know Your Guide
We asked our Guides some fun questions to help you get to know them a bit better.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Besides being a happily married wife of 25 years and mother of two, I'm most proud of the sucessful launch of my Tarot business, The Gilded Apsara.
What is your favorite job?
My favorite job is reading and teaching about the fascinating and nuanced art of Tarot!
What is your most treasured possession?
A first edition copy of The Color Purple, signed by Pulitzer Prize winning author, Alice Walker. It was a gift from my husband on my 47th birthday.
What is your favorite journey?
I love traveling to Brazil, especially Salvador and Bahia. The constant beat of Samba, the beautiful people and the gorgeous lilt of Brazilian Portuguese never fails to intoxicate me.
What is your greatest fear?
Being asked to chair a committee - especially if the request comes from one of my daughters' schools or Parent Associations.
Which talent would you most like to have?
I'd love to be able to sing well! I'm a great dancer, but as my grandmother used to say, "Halicue can't carry a tune in a foot tub." Sad, but true!
Where would you like to live?
I'd love to live in Havana, Cuba for one year. I'm a globe trekker and have traveled there several times, but I'd love one solid year to study Afro-Cuban dance and bask in the food, music and culture.
What do you most value in your friends?
The ability to be vulnerable and honest when talking about their passions, triumphs and mistakes.
Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
Janie, the heroine of "Their Eyes Were Watching God", one of my favorite books by Harlem Renaissance writer, Zora Neale Hurston!
Who are your heroes in real life?
This may seem odd, but Steven King is a huge hero of mine. Madame Vice President Kamala Harris and Lin-Manuel Miranda come in a close 2nd and 3rd.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I'd be a bit less bookish and more outdoorsy.
What is your motto?
"I can resist everything but temptation." Oscar Wilde
What are you looking forward to?
Once the girls both go to college, we plan to live abroad at least three months out of the year. No school calendar restraints, just me and my husband taking a full season to know and love a new corner of the world.
What have you always wanted to try?
What do you do for fun? (or to relax)
I study Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Cuban dance. The movements and music are sultry, seductive and surprizingly cardio intense!
What is your favorite dessert?
